AR is a computer program that contains reading comprehension quizzes designed to help teachers and librarians manage and monitor your children’s independent reading. It is also a great tool for encouraging independent reading. Your child picks the books and reads at his/her own pace. When finished with a book, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. Passing the quiz indicates understanding of what was read. The librarian and your child’s teacher keep track of how your child is progressing throughout the year.
We help your child choose books that are at an appropriate reading level that are challenging without being frustrating, ensuring that your child can pass the quiz and experience success.
There are many choices of books in the AR program at every reading level. Please check on this website: www.arbookfind.com to search for available quizzes. You can also check with the librarian or have your child check when they come to school. The books we carry in the library that have quizzes are clearly marked so the student can tell, not only that it has a quiz, but also the reading level and point value.
Each quiz will generate a certain number of points. AR points are computed based on the difficulty of the book and the length of the book. For example, the Berenstein Bears books, which are about 1,000 words long and have an average reading level of 3.5 (reading at the level of a 3rdgrader in the 5th month), are 0.5 point books. Hank the Cowdog, which is about 23,000 words long and has an average reading level of 4.5, is a 3 point book. The Sun Also Rises, about 70,000 words long and at a reading level of 4.4, is a 10 point book. Children can earn points, or a portion of a book’s points, depending on how well they do on the quiz. A child needs to pass a quiz with a score of 60% or higher.
