1st grade Curriculum

Check out the 1st Curriculum Map to see what we’ll be learning throughout the year. Additionally, here’s a brief breakdown of expectations per subject.

Spelling: At the beginning of each unit, I’ll share the Spelling lists. The first week of a unit, the list contains Pattern words organized by word families (e.g. “ch” or “er” words), and we’ll test at the end of the week. The second week of a unit, the list will include 5 – 6 Memory words (high-frequency words) and additional Pattern words, and we’ll test at the end of the 2nd week (of the unit). There are Superkids Backpack pages (these came home as a whole “Backpack Pages” workbook) that provide extra practice with the reading, spelling, phonics, comprehension, and grammar skills from the unit. I recommend your child completes a page a day as “homework.” You can access unit Spelling lists, Practice Pages, Backpack Pages, and more on the Superkids Parent Portal.

Reading: Your child will get a reading log at the start of each month to record their daily independent reading. We recommend they read aloud a book at their reading level for at least 10 minutes a night. Please help your child color in an object for each day’s reading (these objects are themed per month and vary). At the end of the month, please review your child’s reading log and sign it. Logs are typically due the first school day of the new month – see specific dates on top of the logs.

Math: After each day’s lesson, daily homework from the Reveal workbooks will come home. I’ll also send the day’s in-class practice pages home with the daily homework to reference. The homework is expected to be completed.

Religion: Throughout the year, your child will be assessed on their oral recitation of specific prayers throughout the school year. By the end of the year, 1st graders should know the Our Father, Hail Mary, Guardian Angel, Glory Be, and Blessing before Meals prayers. We will practice these prayers every day. Your child has copies of these prayers in their Religion folders; they’re also posted in the classroom, and here for you to review and pray with your child at home: Catholic Prayer Posters.

Second Step: We’ll learn important social emotional skills like skills for learning, identifying and managing our feelings, refusing bullying, solving problems, and more. Occasionally Home Links will come home with the lesson to reinforce the skills and language we learned that week. These Home Links are expected to be completed and returned by the end of the week – see specific due dates on Google Classroom.
