MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXPECTATIONS
The following are a few guidelines that will make your year successful.
TRANSITIONS TO AND FROM THE CLASSROOM
When students are dismissed from their classroom teacher, they are to cross the parking lot, exit the building, walk along the fence, go through the gate and into the gym hallway as a group. Do not walk through parked cars. Bathroom stops are not allowed. (Come to the gym and ask permission to use the bathroom before class.) The class enters the gym hallway quietly. The same applies after class and heading back to the main building.
CLASS OPENING
Students will sit in squads and start stretch out with the leaders. No talking during warm up.
CLASS ORGANIZATION AND BOUNDARIES
The whistle signals “stop and listen”. Part of the PE participation grade is the ability to exercise self-control during these listening times. The bleachers, crossbars and any equipment set out before class are off-limits. Use only the doors by the bulletin board for entering and leaving the gym. End of class: Each individual has 30 seconds to line up at the door, ready for closing instructions.
ATTIRE AND FREE DRESS
School uniform is worn during class. Any items, which are not part of the St. Luke uniform, should be left in the hallway. This includes coats, hats, non-school sweatshirts, etc. Remove these items without prompting or reminders from the teacher. Shirts may be untucked for activity but must be tucked in when lining up to leave class. Proper tennis shoes should be worn. Even on free dress days, students are expected to be able to participate fully. This means 1) proper tennis shoes 2) attire that allows movement and full participation.
BATHROOM/DRINKS
Students may use the bathroom or drinking fountain with teacher permission.
MEDICAL PROCEDURES
If a student is unable to participate in an activity because of illness or injury, that student will need a note from home. This will excuse the student for up to one week. Any excuse, which is longer than a week, will need a medical release from a doctor.
ABSENCES
If you know you are going to be absent in advance, please communicate this with Mrs. Curran. Excessive absences in a trimester can adversely affect your grade.
VOLUNTEER JOBS
Students may volunteer for leadership jobs. This includes stretch out leaders, equipment captains, and hall monitors. These will be changed monthly or by trimester. Students who volunteer for these jobs and do them well will earn an extra credit “A” for that trimester. We are forming Catholic Christian Leaders.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
Fire: line up quickly and quietly at middle gym doors and exit to spot on playground in assigned homeroom area.
Earthquake: Drop and cover along the west wall. Hold until signal given to line up at middle doors.
Lockdown: Stay in gym and sit quietly along east wall. Outside entry doors will be locked.
Teacher leaves the gym: continue activity following PE rules.
